The much awaited Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort opened on Wednesday with the Summer Bride collection of none other than the fashion maestro, Manish Malhotra. The opening show was a Bollywood studded event with stars like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaqueline Fernandez and Arjun Kapoor turning show stoppers for the celebrated fashion designer.

BollywoodHis summer specific collection “Elements” is all about soft fabrics that are candidly bridal. Models walked for 70 different drapes on the ramp that sought inspiration from earth, water, wind and flame. Whether you are the bride or the one in the bridal party, the collection offered something for everyone with a flurry of ethnic options (Malhotra is known for) that ranged from saris, lehengas, cocktail dresses to gowns.

We simply loved the crepes, tussars and the organzas used in the creations woven with intricate embroidery that glittered with salli sequins, and jeweled flowers that reflected his craftsmanship and prowess far superior than his recently launched fabric focused “Regal Threads” line. The summery hues of powder blue, blush pink, nude or grey accentuated the elegance of the entire collection. It was a dreamy and fascinating collection in pastel shades that makes for a perfect bridal party wear this season.

While we couldn’t take our eyes off the traditional Indian silhouettes blended on contemporary material, a  sharply tailored menswear collection by Malhotra in shades of mint, blue, salmon, grey and ivory also won our applauds.

And, as a Manish Malhotra show could not be complete without his Bollywood clients, we witnessed a starry night once more with his celebrity muses from the upcoming movie “Ki and Ka” Arjun Kapoor (in a dark blue traditional sherwani paired with a silver jacket) and Kareena Kapoor. But, we must admit that the star that took our breath away was Jacqueline Fernandez who looked resplaendant in a glittery silver cocktail gown. Other celebs like, Nita Ambani, Farah Khan, Dia Mirza, Shriya Saran, Sophie Choudry were among others who were also seen walking for the fashion maestro.

Rajesh Pratap Singh

Taking a cue from his Gold Rush collection, the veteran designer Rajesh Pratap Singh gave us garments in midnight blue with handprinted gold motifs. His designs introduced us to fine zardozi work linear silhouettes and a style that was inspired from the Pichwai painting technique of Rajasthan. We also loved the concept of long jackets with pants, the fluid shapes and sleek patterns.

Rahul Mishra

We must say that we simply loved Rahul Mishra’s creations which seemed to be inspired from his own collection at the Paris Fashion Week. The use of plenty of motifs on long flowing skirts, Khadi evening gowns that was a sight to behold with those flower motifs.

Anju Modi

Anju Modi stayed loyal to her signature work of intricate embroidery on rich hues that reelected the royal charm. Her creations continued with the dazzling mirror work, block printing and gorgeous zardozi on the quintessential anarkalis, lehengas and on the modern yet traditional asymmetrical skirts.

Abraham and Thakore

The eternal ghagra cholis took a contemporary twist with intriguing hoods attached created by the duo David Abraham and Rajesh Thakore for their collection, Shimmer. We especially loved the use of gold and dust spread along the couture. They transformed the traditional Gujarati kedia into modern silhouettes that gathered all the applauds.

Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna

While the designer duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna focused on tie-and-dye collection for women that featured trendy jackets paired with trousers and skirts, they also men’s regalia in combination of red and beige.

Samant Chauhan

Samant Chauhan’s line was all about lengthy dresses in shades of grey that were highlighted with fine embroidery on flared silhouettes and asymmetrical hemlines.

Pankaj and Nidhi

For Pankaj and Nidhi it was all about orange and pink shades that brightened up the ultra-feminine fishtail dresses. The look was balanced with funky hair streaks in the same hues of pink and orange.

Amit Aggarwal

Sheer ruffles and clear peplums formed the futuristic collection of Amit Aggarwal that had that ethnic touch and yet so contemporary. The lace defined ensembles in vibrant shades like, orange, red and blue are oh so trendy.

Aneeth Arora

For Aneeth Arora it was more of traditional approach with fabrics woven in Benarasi and Chanderi technique enhanced with block printing on maxi dresses.

Whether it’s the dapper dresses for the menswear collection, comfort wear, structured silhouettes or the layered, there was something for everyone. It was all about celebrating freshness and crafts with a blend of traditional and contemporary.

Coming to the Day 3 of the AIFW, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium dazzled with the menswear collections which was a sartorial splendor by three designers. While Ujjwal Dubey (Kolkata) showcased a fusion of structured fittings and drapes with dhoti style trousers, the designs by Divyam Mehta on the other hand were in earthy tones with block printing, kantha work or shibori designs balanced with bandhgalas, and samurai pants that signified the contemporary globe trotter. For Rohit Kamra, it was more about fitted bandhgala suits and traditional jackets.

Menswear

The second half of the show witnessed some relaxing creations by JJ Valaya with classic Kurtas, Manak Singh with Sikh inspired couture, Rohit Bal with his dazzling Vampire collection, Troy Costa label that dressed up the Kabaddi League players with tailored suits, while Rahul Khanna and Rohit Gandhi showcased their collection of draped aprons and kurta shirts paired with black and white separates.

We witnessed a spectacular evening with Anupama Dayal’s Anupamaa line that showcased a collection with Nagaland’s tribal elements. while her prints were inspired from the wild, the off-shoulder blouses or the Khadi cotton dresses mesmerized as well. While there were plenty of new generation designers who displayed their creations on the Day 4 of the AIFW 2016 event, it was the showstoppers Malaika Arora Khan and Athiya Shetty who stole the show.

Anupama

The curvaceous Malaika walked for Mandira Wirk’s collection titled Romancing Rococo that reflected ultra-feminine refined style. Athiya on the other hand walked the ramp for designer Namrata Joshipura in a black bodysuit which she carried with quite aplomb and must we say that simply dazzled in this sexy yet classy attire.

Namrata Joshipura focused more on fringe detailing, gleaming hats, dresses with botanical prints and luxe red jumpsuits. We were quite amused with the return of gingham checks by Aneeth Arora on khadi trousers or dresses, while the embroidered khadi blouses, recycled woven tops, wool dresses or the reversible jackets caught our attention too. Elegant geometric patterns and flowers filled Nikita Mahajan’s rose and ivory regalia made of handcrafted laces. We love the sequined detailing interwoven with pearls though.

From pre-draped saris and constructed palazzos to layered anarkalis Mandira Wirk’s designs was all about flowing silhouettes, sheer fabrics and flattering cuts in shades of gold, black, beige and ivory. Ashima Leena’s collection reflected the rich work on Persian carpets that adorned the fluid silhouettes. Appliques, prints and playful feathers all over on earthy hues like, mustard or olive green highlighted out the Persian culture perfectly.  Sari took a contemporary turn with Anavila’s creations, while we witnessed layering of the traditional Indian attire with cardigans which were decked up by 3D embroidered flowers. Pleated underskirts with floral prints and bell sleeves also accentuated these unique creations.

Mandra

We loved the comfy look by Eka which was more of polka dots matched with palazzos, checkered regalia in warm tones that signified a more cozy winter wear collection. For Bodice it was rediscovering the traditional wardrobe through the contemporary and fabulous fabrics. Soft silhouettes, oversized drapes, waist pleats and woolen work formed the designs. Lovebirds showcased their penchant for color blocks in reds, greys, black and more that formed their winter collection. Woolen layering, midi dresses and the robe coats were simply the attention grabbers of the evening.

Pointilism painting technique and rib paneling was the highlight of the ILK collection by Shikha and Vinita. The sartorial cocoon coats, transformed saris, opaque textiles and candy blues were all so serene yet fashionable. Leather bralets with fringe detailing, elegant forms of easygoing formal and casual attires, kangaroo print cloaks or the Kurtas in mellowed hues perfectly highlighted the concept of the collection Ikai by Ragini Ahuja.

While you browse through those fantastic creations by the talented pool of designers, we will be back with the Amazon India’s final day roundup soon.

Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter 2016 – Day 1 & Day 2

The Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter took off in style with some link to the previous season. While the gala show at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium had almost the same outdoor decor as the earlier season, even the color schemes appeared identical for many designers with gold, red, silver, grey, black and brown visible in the autumn-winter 2016 collection creations.

Day 1

Varun Bahl

Having said that, the 5-day fashion extravaganza was opened by the celebrated designer Varun Bahl as anticipated, with his collection “Nocturne”. Known for his penchant towards intermingling traditional hand embroidery with modern silhouettes, the Delhi based designer kept his essence alive with flora and fauna prints with that added bling on flattering riffles and pleated cover-ups. Oh! We noticed those lovely glossy loafers too!

Gaurav Gupta

Gaurav Gupta uncovered his offbeat concept of “zero waste” with his dark and deep creation “Melt”. While we loved the idea of draping the entire stretch of the apparel in one fabric forming glamorous gowns and drapes, we were also smitten with his idea of blending Merino wool with steel and silks on his trademark handcrafted and engineered fabrics. The silks from the collection “Mumuksha” were gorgeous (tussar silk and silk zari) that formed the oh! so lovey sheers, steel jackets and what not.

Designer Pallavi Mohan of the “Note So Serious” brand exhibited a breezy appeal with her wintery wardrobe for those chilly nights. We loved the charcoal shades from her collection “Synthesis” on laser styled leather pieces with lattice work.

Hemant and Nandita

Hemant and Nandita weaved the gothic charm based on contemporary philosophy that reflected the perfect blend of vintage ideas and modern silhouettes. While they maintained their heavy fall of the fabric with the right balance of metallic shades, we also gaped at the breathtaking fur lined coats, lace up boots, from their luxurious boho range “A Dark Enchantress” in vibrant colors like, gold copper, midnight blues and brown.

Day 2

Rajesh Pratap Singh

Gold splashed all over with Rajesh Pratap Singh’s new collection “Gold Rush” that added that shine to the structured fabrics. He stylishly blended the shine with white or printed apparels and left us awestruck as usual with his artistic take on the metallic hue.

Samant Chauhan

Silk was at its best with Samant Chauhan’s creations and we must modestly admit that his collection silk route was among the best in the evening. We witnessed some beautiful show of Bhagalpuri and cotton silk in his trademark A line silhouettes in neutral shades elegantly depicting the Rajputana art and culture.

Kanika Saluja

Taking hints from the Victorian epoch, the Annaika collection by Kanika Saluja was a visual extravaganza that featured leather detailing with lock and stitch and presented by her showstopper Shriya Saran. We quite loved Saluja’s menswear line as well.

Inspired from the Mughal elegance and carrying the idiosyncrasies of Gujarat, the Mashru collection by Virtues by Viral, Ashish and Vikrant was a clear colorful tribute to the native state. We could not help but simply admire the exquisite lehengas and sherwanis balanced with royal accessories.

What to Wear: Fashion Tips for First Day at Work

Your wardrobe may be stashed with piles of clothes, but that perfect attire simply seems to be missing especially if it’s your first day at work. We understand that predicament as the first impression that you create at your new job does mean a lot in the long term. While you should dress professionally, you should also look chic and in vogue. So let’s find out how to impress your boss at the first day of your work with these 7 fashion tips..

Closed Toe Pumps

Tresmode Women’s Peepump-3 Pumps

Kielz Women’s Pumps

Pumps are your best bet at the office especially the nude ones that make a subtle statement about your fashion sense bang on the first day. Though you can experiment with a red, white or black occasionally, nude pumps are the classics that can almost never go wrong.

Peep toes or fashionable stilettoes are a big no-no, so simply stick to the ones with closed toe. They look stylish yet elegant with balanced attire.

Pencil Skirts

FOREVER NEW Rib Pencil Skirt

Femella Animal Print Women’s Pencil Skirt

It’s not your first day at the college or your first date, so stay away from those fancy flowing skirts. Pencil skirts or Bodycon Skirts are the ideal outfits for your office, and by sporting them at the first day at your work you already win half the war!

Though one can play with solid colors (not patterns or prints) like, a royal blue or fuchsia if office allows and pair them with separates in contrast colors, it is advisable to stick to neutral colors like, nude or gray shades paired with white or off-white sophisticated blouses at the first day. Keep the fun for later, what say?

Power Suit

Allen Solly Black Blazer

A power suit can never go wrong in a professional environment. Throw a blazer on a knee length pencil skirt, or straight cut trouser in pin stripes with the quintessential white blouse beneath or add class with black stockings the power dressing is made to impress.

For the first day we advise you stick to neutral shades such as, black, gray or cream and set the ball rolling in your favor.

Wide Legged Trousers

Nothing like wearing fashionable trousers and still gain that respect. Wide-legged trousers let you chive just that with the right cut and pattern. It’s extremely important to make sure that you wear well-tailored stuff, especially the pants which are not to cling to your buttocks.

Remember that you are at the first day of your work and you are there to create a professional impression that should call for honor and grace.

Muted Makeup

Once again remind yourself of the fact that you should leave behind your street chic style back when you are heading for the office, especially on the first day! But that does not mean that you should wear no makeup, but it should be rather subdued. Go for a nude makeup, just some sunscreen, base and pressed powder.

For the eyes stick to the basic black with no smudged look, a hint of mascara (not essential), and some tinted lip balm or a lipstick in shades of nude. Stay away from bright colors if you are really serious about creating an impression.

Statement Jewelry

Imli Street Silver Copper Necklace

Keep your entire look simple with just one piece of statement jewelry instead of wearing them all. We sure understand that you have all those junk pieces to show off, but just one is good enough for your office.

For a stronger statement just select a chic yet classy neckpiece with your business casual and you are all set to rock your first day.

Balance Colors

SVT ADA Collection Black Printed Bodycon Dress

Red Cotton Peplum Dress

Learn to mix and match the right color before even you step out for your first day at work, as one wrong step can spoil your entire effort. If you are wearing separates, DO NOT wear them in same colors or two bright or two muted colors.

Balance the colors with one muted and one bright and with the right shades. Do some research on the internet if you are still unsure about which colors would best match with each other, before you end up matching a pink with a red! When in doubt, stick to the basics with neutral shades.
