New Year brings a lot of joy, hopes, aspirations, and of course, New Year resolutions. Most of it is (Uhem!) related to weight loss and eating healthy, and undoubtedly, I am one of them! I was tired of having those instant soups every other day, and so, I thought of making some desi recipe at home for this winter instead of the Chicken parmesan recipe. Daal or lentils, also offer a good amount of protein that can be savored as a vegetarian alternative to chicken at times.
Of all the Indian soup recipes I know, daal/lentil forms a major part of it. I am a daal lover and so wondered how it would be to make some daal shorba at home with a twist.
While it’s high in protein, it also makes for a great comfort food in the winters especially, at dinner. All you need is a handful of ingredients and this winter recipe is ready to serve in minutes. Here goes my list of ingredients for the yummy daal shorba.
Soup Recipe Ingredients
- ½ cup chana daal
- ½ cup moong dal
- 1 tspn ginger paste
- 1 medium-sized onion
- 1 or 2 medium-sized tomatoes (as per taste)
Tadka Ingredients for the Dal Shorba:
- 1 tbspn butter
- 1tspn garlic paste
Making of the Indian Soup
Soak the chana dal and the moong dal for 30 minutes in water. Cut the onion and the tomatoes in 4 equal halves. This helps them get cooked fast. Now, pressure cook both the lentils along with the other soup recipe ingredients for 3 whistles. Once the pressure cooker has cooled down and the lid is open, take out the soup ingredients, let it cool for sometime and then blend it in the Mixer. You can keep the consistency of the mixture as per your taste. I prefer it in a fine soup-like consistency, so I whisk it for a while.
Now take a deep wok or a kadhai and add the butter. Once it’s heated up, add the garlic paste and fry it for a few seconds. Avoid frying for long as the Garlic may burn. As soon it starts leaving aroma, pour the whisked soup ingredients and add some water to get the right consistency.
Cool it down and serve hot. You can also add spinach to the soup ingredients for a twist. For variation in the tadka, you can also add cumin seeds and asafoetida (hing).
So, start your New Year with this yummy and healthy Desi soup recipe, and get set with your weight loss regime.
